01 Sep What Else Can I Do To Get Healthy? Comprehensive Gut Healing Formulas
If you do not fix your gut problems, no amount of vitamins, minerals or health foods are going to make you well.
Food sensitivities and digestive issues are the direct result of some level of inflammation at the gut lining. Avoiding food triggers and adopting a healthy diet is the first place to start. The second is addressing all of the 4Rs – remove, replace, reinoculate, repair – with clinical nutrients.
During the next 2 weeks, we are removing the foods that trigger inflammation and replacing, reinoculating and repairing the gut with therapeutic levels of nutrtients that will promote gut tissue regeneration:
- tightening cellular junctions,
- reduce hyperpermeability,
- soothe and heal an inflamed GI lining.
- replenish good gut microbes
The gastrointestinal tract contributes to health in many ways. The function of the gut far exceeds processing food, nutrient and fluid intake. Numerous studies show that the gut is actually responsible for a number of immune functions in the body. The gut even reports to the brain via hormones about energy uptake that can affect mood and general well-being.
The key to achieving and maintaining gut health is through the gastrointestinal barrier, a complex internal defense system. You see, your gut is lined with good bacteria that keep the intestinal lining tight-locked. When the good bacteria are depleted or stomach acid levels are imbalanced, tiny holes can permeate this lining. It is similar to a fishing boat: If you have holes in the boat, it’s going to sink! In the same way, holes in your intestinal tract cause the body to sink. That is, nutrients are not absorbed efficiently and a host of diseases can ensue because your body’s natural immune defense system is down.
Following the 4R program for leaky gut syndrome can address the true underlying reason for feeling tired all the time, chronic depression symptoms, irritable bowel, autoimmune diseases, and more. When you devote time to improving the health of your gastrointestinal tract by removing, replacing, re-inoculating, and repairing, you’re doing your whole body a favor.
Thanks for taking charge of your health and wellbeing!
Please note: the following supplement recommendations are only available at Pure Pharmacy’s Oak St (@W. 22nd) location.
Begin taking Probiotics
Brand recommendation: ProFlora Blend. This is an affordable-multi strain FOS-free probiotic that I personally formulated. It is comprised of non-pathogenic human strain flora delivering 20B/serving.** Shelf-stable probiotics that are not sealed in a blister pack that protects the probiotics from moisture and oxygen should be avoided. In general, be wary of products that claim they do not require refrigeration. The fact is, at higher temperatures bacteria will grow quickly and die. This is why all my probiotics are shipped over night in climate-controlled packaging. Learn more.
Begin using L-Glutamine
Brand recommendation: GI Repair. This is a comprehensive formula delivering 5 grams of gluten-free glutamine per serving to help relieve inflammatory conditions of the GI tract and repair the gut lining. Learn more.
Begin using Lactoferrin and Mushroom extracts
Brand recommendation: GI Renew works quickly (8 weeks to 3 months) and is particularly useful for people who are prone to allergies and frequent viral or bacterial infections. It combines high levels of lactoferrin, glutathione precursors, growth factors and white blood cell promoters along with a 6 organic medicinal mushrooms (Reishi, Coriolus, Siitake, Maitake, Chaga, Cordyceps). GI Renew contains 14 grams of protein from sprouted, fermented brown rice. Learn more.
Other Suggestions for Health:
Increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids with fish oil supplementation
- Prevents and improves depressive symptoms and psychological distress
- Decreases inflammation in the gut
- Prevents cognitive decline – improves focus, memory, and learning ability
- Helps with hormone balance and immune regulation
- Lowers triglycerides
- Lowers high blood pressure
- Decreases incidence of stroke
And these are just a sampling of the positive health benefits! A healthy diet contains a proper balance of omega-3s, omega-6s and omega-9 fatty acids. Unfortunately the typical North American diet contains 14-25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids, mostly in the form of unhealthy vegetable oils such as corn oil. Since omega-3s cannot be created by the body, the easiest way to obtain the healthy fats is to take a fish oil supplement.
Reverse nutrient deficiencies
Many people are deficient in critical vitamins and nutrients without being aware of it. This is because your body depends on optimal levels of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to run its metabolic pathways, or the biochemical reactions that produce energy. And most people are simply not eating the types or quantities of fruits and vegetables and healthy protein and fats to produce the needed nutrition. In fact there is a strong case for the fact that one of the biggest contributors to our modern health crisis is the food we put on our plates and the lack of essential nutrients it provides.
Even when diet is optimal, medications, physical, emotional, and environmental stressors as well as metabolic challenges can significantly deplete our nutritional stores.
Brand recommendation: High ORAC Multivitamin. This is one of my signature formulations containing over 50 nutrient sources and formulated in a base of ORAC-rich antioxidants from Resveratrol, Alpha-lipoic acid, Turmeric, N-Acetylcysteine and organic berries.
Increase your intake of greens and alkalinize your diet
Whether you sneak them into a smoothie, your morning matcha or serve them in a salad, leafy greens, microgreens, and algae boast loads of benefits.
They are rich in vital nutrients, enzymes, and fiber thereby aiding with DNA repair, lipid balance, hydration, blood vessel elasticity, immune cell optimization, blood sugar and hormone balance.
Brand recommendation: Vital Greens. This is green focused (not diluted with grains, beans, fruits, seeds/flax, stevia, or rancid probiotics!). Organic, raw, gf, vegan, wild-crafted packed with blue-green algae, spirulina, chlorella, moringa, nettle leaf, parsley, yacon root, alfalfa, shilajit and more! Includes pancreatic digestive enzymes.
