Eco-Friendly Laundry Tips & Alternatives

Follow these guidelines for a greener, cleaner laundry routine!

When purchasing laundry products:

  • Avoid products that contain the following: phthalates, bleach, optical brighteners, petroleum, surfactants, phosphates, and pesticides
  • Avoid toxic fabric softening chemicals and fragrances
  • Use plant-based detergents and products with natural ingredients
  • Look for products with recyclable or biodegradable packaging

Or make your own laundry products:

  • Natural whiteners: try lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, borax, or sunlight
  • Natural detergent: combine 1 part borax, 1 part washing soda, and add 5-7 drops of essential oil for a natural scent, if desired
  • Natural stain removers: try club soda, corn starch, or hydrogen peroxide
  • Natural fabric softener: combine 1 cup vinegar, 2 tbsp baking soda, and 20 drops of essential oil

When washing your laundry:

  • Use less detergent. HE (High Efficiency) machines require less water, energy, and significantly less detergent
  • Do full loads of laundry
  • Hang clothes to dry
