If you had an inkling that fake sugar was bad for you, more evidence that you could be right. New research on artificial sweeteners suggests that they may disrupt the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, causing metabolic changes that can be a precursor to diabetes. Although the results are far from conclusive, the researcher said he had already changed his own behavior — refraining from using artificial sweeteners in his coffee.
